East Approach

  1. From say, Roanoke, VA, take I-81 south until you encounter the Abingdon, VA exit # 19. This is highway US 58.
  2. Take US 58 south all the way into Damascus, VA.
  3. At the end of downtown Damascus, the road comes to a tee intersection and US 58 turns right. Proceed right.
  4. Almost 1 mile exactly from where you turned right (in the preceeding step), the road forks with US 58 going to the left and highway 91 going to the right. Bear right onto route 91. The intersection has been upgraded lately so it won't feel too much like a fork intersection, but there are signs indicating this. As sort of an indicator that you are on the right track, you may notice that you actually cross the Appalachian Trail about 1/4 mile prior to the US 58/route 91 split.
  5. Proceed on route 91, crossing the VA/TN boarder and eventually into downtown Mountain City, TN.
  6. At the stoplighted intersection with Main Street Mountain City, highway 91 officially turns right, but it will be easier and quicker to proceed straight thru the intersection. In about 1 mile, you will come to another tee intersection. The road crossing in front is highway US 421.
  7. Turn left, or south, onto US 421 and proceed to the second stoplight (not counting this intersection's stoplight. This will be the intersection of US 421 and TN highway 167. It is also know (and marked as) the "Shouns Crossroads" intersection.
  8. Turn right onto TN highway 167 (an indicated southerly direction but actually more westward).
  9. Continue on TN 167 for about 1 1/2 miles. The office will be on the left and the Maymead sign will be on the right. Turn left into the driveway and you are there. It is a white building with green roof. A warm welcome to you.
  10. From Roanoke, VA to Mountain City, TN is about a 3 hour drive.
