Hurricane Helene Response

OUR POST STORM RESPONSE

On September 24, 2024, Hurricane Helene devastated the mountains of Western North Carolina and Eastern Tennessee. With virtually all of our resources, both personnel and equipment, located in the mountains and foothills of Western North Carolina, our company sustained heavy losses. Our Mountain Division fleet lost over 30 dump trucks and tri-axle trailers in the flood that followed and the primary access to our quarry in Mountain City Tennessee was completely destroyed.

Immediately following the storm, after assessing the damage and doing our best to communicate with our personnel to ensure their safety, a plan was launched to begin the reconstruction efforts as quickly as possible. A crew mobilized to begin repair work on the road to the quarry Sunday the 26th and by end of day on Monday the 27th, the quarry was operating at three times it's normal capacity.

This response would prove to be detrimental due to the damage sustained to US 421 between Boone, NC and Mountain City, TN. With multiple significant failures, some as much as 80 feet deep, the impassibility of US 421 would leave the community of Mountain City completely cut off from vital supplies located in Boone and surrounding areas.

Despite the circumstances, Maymead personnel promptly responded and began reconstruction on US 421 in partnership with the Tennessee Department of Transportation, Summers-Taylor, Inc. and Baker's Construction Services, Inc. on Monday September 27th.

Additionally, Maymead received a federal directive from the US government, enlisting our services to respond at the Baxter Medical Facility in Marion, North Carolina. Baxter Medical sustained significant losses to both it's facilities and critical infrastructure including employee parking, access roads and it's primary bridge. As the largest provider of IV solution in the US, this posed a significant threat to our nations medical system.

Our dedicated staff and key leaders worked tirelessly to complete the Baxter reconstruction in just _____ days. US 421 was completed and officially opened to traffic on December 18. Neither of these projects could have been completed in such a timely fashion without the commitment and sacrifice of Maymead employees. Despite transportation and supply issues, complications with water, power and other needs at their own homes, our personnel, throughout the entire family of Maymead companies, came together to aid our communities in a tremendous time of need. We are incredibly proud of each member of our team, from the quarry and plant staff, to our highway crews as well as team members from LOVEN Ready Mix and Western Carolina Safety for their involvement in this reconstruction effort.
